The 'sardar' conundrum that Ajay has to solve!

By Abid, Glamsham Editorial

There is no doubt that Bollywood has for long been fascinated with the Punjabi community and their songs and dances (bhangra), stories of valour and culture has been shown in many films and has been patronized whole heartedly by the audience.

Amongst them standing tall is the turbaned 'sardar'! Who can forget 'Punjab da Puttar', Sunny Deol and his electrifying performance as a patriotic 'sardar' in the all-time blockbuster, GADAR EK PREM KATHA. Even his second stint as a 'sardar' in JO BOLE SO NIHAAL was widely appreciated and it did get a very good opening and would have proved another big success for Sunny, but it faced a lot of controversies and had to be removed from many theaters amidst protests which killed the bright box-office prospects of the film. Sunny was lately seen in 'sardar' appearance in YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA with papa Dharmendra and brother Bobby Deol.

Another actor who has successfully essayed the role of a 'sardar' in recent times is our very own 'Dilli da munda', 'Khiladi' Akshay Kumar. His SINGH IS KINNG is considered as one of the biggest hits of Akshay Kumar's career (till HOUSEFULL 2) both in India and Overseas!

So now it comes down to Ajay Devgn to pull off the role of a 'sardar' in SON OF SARDAR. What must be pointed out is that this is not the first time that Ajay is essaying the role of a 'sardar'. One cannot forget his National Award winning act in Rajkumar Santoshi's THE LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH, but despite huge critical acclaim, the film turned out to be big losing proposition for Tips, who had produced the film. We must admit (in Ajay's favour) that the film was affected quite badly by another film on Shaheed Bhagat Singh which starred Bobby Deol as the lead (and Sunny Deol ), 23rd MARCH 1931: SHAHEED, and released on the same day as TLOBS.

There are strong chances that Ajay will triumph this time, the reason being that SON OF SARDAR is a light hearted comedy about two warring 'sardar' families, and Ajay has definitely established himself as a comic actor ever since the GOLMAAL series.
